Ph.D. Graduate Student Researchers
Interested in completing your Ph.D. thesis work with us? The Haynes lab at Emory carries out work that provides opportunities for Ph.D. students to pursue a thesis in biomedical applications of epigenetic engineering. When there is space, we consider students from the GA Tech/ Emory Biomedical Engineering program, and the Emory GDBBS Genetics and Molecular Biology and Cancer Biology programs.
Responsibilities/ Expectations: Responsibilities and expectations are supported with the resources and opportunities that are provided by our group.
- Complete experiments for one of the currently active projects for 1 to 2 years (prior to qualifying exam and thesis proposal)
- Develop a proposal that is anchored in chromatin epigenetic engineering, and makes practical use of technologies developed in the Haynes lab; may be focused on any disease or tissue engineering goal as desired (if appropriate and feasible)
- Mentor at least one undergraduate trainee for at least two semesters
- Publish at least one review article and one original research article as lead author
Requirements: We do not offer “direct admission” into the lab. Admission into one of the following PhD programs is required before joining our team as a PhD student:
- Emory/ Georgia Tech Wallace H. Coulter Biomedical Engineering Ph.D. Program – In 2023 our program was ranked #1 in the nation by the U.S. News and World Report

About the Haynes Lab at Emory: The Haynes lab is part of the joint Emory/ GA Tech W.H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering. We are located in a state-of-the-art facility in the Health Sciences Research Building. The space is furnished with benches, a dedicated tissue culture room, shared autoclaves and a cold room, and office desks located in a food-friendly area adjacent to the lab. Core facilities for mouse models, next-generation sequencing, flow cytometry, are located on the same campus. A state-of-the-art and microscopy core (including wide-field and confocal) is located in the same building one level below the Haynes lab.
